If you are considering or have opted for haemodialysis, we will contact you to discuss access for dialysis. Referral for dialysis access will normally be required when your kidney function has dropped to about 15%.

In order for dialysis to take place, we need to have good access to your blood stream.

The best way to do this is via a fistula (which is like a super-vein) which can be made in your arm by joining one of your arteries to one of your veins.

Our role includes –

​

• Educating patients about access before starting dialysis

• Referral for having a fistula – we organise an ultrasound scan of your arm and an appointment with a consultant vascular surgeon for further discussion

• Point of contact if you have any queries or concerns about your future or existing access

• Supporting and reassuring you through what can be a daunting process

• Follow up appointments face to face or via telephone when you have had your fistula made

• Assessment of your fistula at the time of starting dialysis

• Organising follow up scans of your fistula if required

 

 

The Dialysis Access Nurses are available as follows:

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 08.00hrs to 18.00hrs

Wednesday from 08.00hrs to 16.30hrs

Friday from 08.00hrs to 17.30hrs
