Welcome to the Renal Clinics..
There are a number of different types of nephrology clinics. The clinics generally run from 09:00 – 17:00 hours daily and are usually staffed by a consultant nephrologist (kidney doctor), a registrar or a clinical assistant and are facilitated by a team of clinic nurses.
The general nephrology clinic is for those referred to a nephrologist to look after their kidneys. Some of the nephrologists hold low clearance clinics (or pre-dialysis clinics) for those patients who are perhaps close to needing to start dialysis or receive a renal (kidney) transplant.
For those patients who have started dialysis there are haemodialysis clinics for those doing haemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis clinics for those doing peritoneal dialysis.
For those who have received a transplanted kidney there is a separate transplant clinic for them, and another clinic run by the transplant surgeons for those being prepared to receive a renal transplant.
The nephrology outpatient clinics are very busy and it is important that you tell us in good time if you are unable to attend any appointments. Whilst we allocate individual appointment times some people will need tests before seeing the doctor. For this reason the appointment time given is the time you should arrive in the department and is not necessarily the time that you should expect to see the doctor or nurse.
