Your kidneys are two small organs in your lower back, but they do some very important jobs:

  • They clean your blood by removing waste and extra fluid

  • They help control your blood pressure

  • They keep the right balance of salts and minerals in your body

  • They help keep your bones and blood healthy

You can think of them as your body’s natural filter system.

Am I at risk?

Some people are more likely to develop kidney disease than others.

You may be at higher risk if you:

  • Have diabetes

  • Have high blood pressure

  • Have a family history of kidney disease

  • Are over 60

  • Have heart disease

Doctors can check your kidney health using simple blood and urine tests.

They may also use tools (like risk calculators - see video) to estimate your chance of kidney disease getting worse. These help guide decisions about your care.

If you’re unsure about your risk, speaking to your GP or healthcare team is a good first step.

You’re not alone.

Many people live full and active lives with kidney disease.Whether you’re just learning about kidney health or managing a diagnosis, support and information can help you feel more in control.
